The Tesco Christmas aisle has been stocked for weeks, Mr. Claus is preparing to set up his grotto in shopping centres across the nation, and there’s less than 50 shopping days left - Christmas 2011 is almost here!

And here at Spinetinglers Christmas means one thing – The Christmas Ghost Story Competition – which is now open!

We had a great response last year and lots of festively fabulous entries, so we can’t wait to see what this year brings. We just have a couple of rules we ask you to try and stick to -

  • Christmas must be a central theme - you can't just mention that someone was wandering down Oxford Street in the glow of the Christmas lights.
  • Macabre & Morose? Funny & Uplifting, Ghosts & Ghouls, Possessions & Poltergeists the choice is yours but it must have some link to the "otherworldly" or at least a passing nod to the "Supernatural"
  • A maximum word count of 5,000 (but as it’s Christmas we will let you away with hitting 5,500.

Apart from that you can let your imagination run wild!

You can submit your stories through the site as normal; just make sure you put ‘Christmas Ghost Story Competition’ in the title box. Or you can email them directly to me – lauren@spinetinglers.co.uk – again if you could put ‘Christmas Ghost Story Competition’ as the subject heading of your email, that way I can ensure it ends up in the hands of the right people!

The closing date for submissions is midnight on December 16th.

As always, 1st Place wins £100.00 plus a certificate and guaranteed inclusion in a future
Spinetinglers Anthology, 2nd Place wins £50.00, 3rd, 4th and 5th each win £25.00. All prize money is in British Pounds (stg) or your local currency equivalent.

The top 5 stories will be announced daily on the site - starting with 5th place on the 19th of December until we reach our overall winner on December 23rd.

If you have any questions just fire me an email and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Good luck!

My Spiney sense is tingling!

Been bogged down for the couple of weeks or so in a short story that I seem to have completely lost the focus of. Initially it seemed like a sure fire idea but now I seem to be over-complicating it and writing myself round in circles every time I fire up the lap top.

Thanks then to Spiney for coming to my rescue. Out of nowhere I suddenly have an idea for a Christmas story and not only did I bang out the first few pages last night, but I actually enjoyed writing it and can’t wait to get back to it this evening!

Nice when that happens.

I know how you feel on that one.  Funny how a story controls you not the other way around.

I am half way through a short story on a very depressing subject so this will make a nice change.  Have already started it and it seems to flow quiet nicely.  Can't say it will win prizes for originiality but it's a bit more light hearted than other stories I have written so who knows.  Smiley

As you say, nice on the rare occasions that happens.  Struggled and struggled to write anything yesterday, but have just written a 3k story in a day - couldn't type fast enough.  Love it when that happens, but it's so rare.

Perhaps you can go back to the original one with fresh eyes in a few days, Peter.

Good on you both for starting on your Xmas stories already.

Good luck to everyone who's entered the competition - I'm looking forward to reading some great stories over the Festive period.

This sounds fun. I've got a couple of ideas, but so little time to complete it... Off to get started!

Some people write better when under pressure - you might surprise yourself, so go for it and good luck.

Nope not going to do it this time around.  I just don't have the time and I know if I submit what I write now I wouldn't get anywhere because it would have been written too fast.  I may still write it and post it on my blog for people to read and next year do something a little head of time.

Sad really but there is no point submitting something if it will never stand a chance of getting anywhere.   Sad
