Local Author Declared The New ‘Anne Rice’...
Wondering what to read next? Wonder no longer! Forget the ‘Da Vinci Code’ or the latest ‘Celebrity Biography’ why not try ‘Vrolok’ by Nolene-Patricia Dougan.
Vrolok is a historical fiction with a dark edge; from the moment the book opens you are hooked. The reader is taken on an epic journey following the exploits of the book’s central characters, Vlad and Isabella. When we meet them for the first time, both Vlad and Isabella, are untouched by life’s tragedies but as the book unfolds both characters are corrupted, sometimes by each others’ influence and at other times by the nefarious events that conspire against them. You see them both, plummeting through the depths of despair, and steadily being transformed into vicious, vindictive killers. Despite this, you empathise with these characters, and understand their plight. The pair form a tempestuous bond that can never be broken; their love for each other is all consuming. They drift through four centuries, sometimes together, often apart, and you, the reader, venture with them, as they chance upon the Medicis of Renaissance Italy, as they storm the Bastille, and as they seek revenge after the slaying of Morgan Earp in the Gunfight at OK Coral.
Vrolok is a gripping read and one that will be the cause of many a late night. Although this is a vampire story, it is not the traditional blood and gore fest that we have become accustomed to associate with vampire novels. Vrolok will appeal to those who love the dark gothic literature of the Bronte’s, as the lead character (Isabella) has Catherine Earnshaw’s (Wuthering Heights) rebellious nature tempered with Jane Erye’s strength of will. Lovers of historical fiction will also find much to pique their interest as major and minor historical figures are seamlessly interwoven throughout the flowing narrative. Vrolok, is simply a must read for anyone who enjoys flawless fiction with some of the best characters to be found in any genre.
This is Nolene–Patricia Dougan’s first novel and has been receiving tremendous critical acclaim which would indicate that hers is a name to remember for the future. She has been declared the ‘New Anne Rice’ by Shirley Roe of the Californian Chronicle. (Anne Rice, for those readers who are not dark fiction fans, is considered to be a leading light in this genre and is the author of such best sellers as ‘Interview with a Vampire’ and ‘The Vampire Lestat’.) Shirley Roe - an award winning poet and novelist herself, also went on to state that ‘Vrolok is historical fiction at its finest,’ and the accolades for Vrolok do not stop there. Harriet Klausner, who is one of the United States’ top and most prolific reviewers, stated that ‘Her (Isabella’s) encounters with Van Helsing are some of the best vampire interludes in recent years.’ With praise like this, Nolene-Patricia Dougan is definitely set to become the next big name in literature.
